Why We Are Boosting Primary Healthcare In Our Federal Constituency — BTO
The House of Representatives member representing Akoko North East/North West Federal Constituency, Rep. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has assured that healthcare delivery will be prioritised in his quest of delivering effective representation to the people of the Federal Constituency.
The Federal lawmaker stated this while receiving delegates of Primary Health Care authority who paid him a 'Thank You' visit in Abuja over the health equipment recently distributed across the twenty two primary health care centres in Akoko North East and North West Local Government Areas.
BTO, as popularly called, who is also the Chairman of the House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) had earlier boosted healthcare in the area by facilitating two ambulance buses, 10 tricycle ambulances, four motorcycles and multimillion medical equipment including refrigerators, mattresses, generating sets etc.
This, according to him, was to complement the massive infrastructural transformation currently going on in the area.
While narrating the ugly incident that further spurred him to make the move, he expressed regret over the loss of life of a pregnant woman during the Covid-19 lockdown.
He explained, "We acquired two mobile clinics and mobile ambulances such that since there's a General hospital in Ikare and you need to move somebody from Arigidi or Oyin, if the road is good you have shortened it because timing is very important in medicine and you have a better chance of saving life. That is what is important to us.
"We lost a pregnant woman in Ikare during the Covid-19 lockdown. They were looking for ambulance and before they could rally round to get an ambulance to transport her to Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, she died. That could have been avoided but it's heartbreaking that it happened.
"After handling security I saw that the next thing is about the health of our people and before you can talk about health you must talk about road infrastructure and that is the more reason we are opening up our space in terms of road network.
The professionals led by the Chairman of Doctors working with Ondo State Government, Dr. Arohunmolase Bola, consists of Nurses, Pharmacists, Community Extension Workers, Health Assistants and Laboratory Technicians.
Dr. Arohunmolase who is also the Primary Health Care Director in Akoko North East Local Government Area said the gesture by the legislator was unprecedented and worth appreciating.
He noted, "Thank you for seeing into some of our needs. For you to have come up to do that for us we are indeed very grateful.
"What you are doing is an attestation to the fact that you have a heart that is caring. We have not had it this fine. We are here to say thank you for the health equipment.
"We are so much impressed because this will further enhance the quality of health service delivery in that area. The difficult areas that are hard to reach in delivering health services will be enhanced through this gesture."
